This is the journal for my (I'm
feoh BTW :) geekly alter ego. I am a person first and foremost and I wanted my journal to reflect that (Wouldn't want any interesting young ladies to think I have nothing to offer other than geek :). However geekery is a big part of my life and I need an outlet for this stuff too.
I got my first machine (An atari 400 with 16K RAM and a cassette drive. Woo woo! :) when I was 10 and it's been one big downhill slide from that day to this :)
I then spent several years being an Amiga Zealot (I still love that machine and virtually everything about it to death. To me it still represents a mix of creative and technical excellence not seen in today's market) before being thrown into the meat grinder and being absorbed into the immoral majority of PC owners.
Very high level languages have always been my thing. While I did the usual BASIC & 6502 assembler thing like everybody else I also learned Atari LOGO at the same time and frankly, it blew my mind and still does!
I'm currently working as a release engineer for one of the few surviving dot coms and am slowly but surely morphing myself into a Java developer.
I really like Java and while it's not perfect by any means, it represents "a step out of the basement" for the average programmer which is something I've been waiting for forever :)
I've worn many hats through my 13 years in the tech industry. I've been tech sport, sysadmin, software developer and as I said I'm currently masquerading as a release engineer (Thank you Jim Gizzonio, wherever you are :) and keep coming back to technologies like UNIX and Perl in my work-a-day life.
I also keep daydreaming about someday becoming an accomplished 3D artist. I've finally got a machine and some decent rendering software so we'll see where that one goes :)
My big dream is to be able to leave the office behind and become a consultant, doing work (software development, sysadmin, etc) from home via the net and living someplace away from the thronging masses like Vermont :)
Anyway, Despite the crappy economy I still say it's a great time to be a geek :)
